We are truly living on a so called “plastic planet” and what does this mean for our health?  Studies show that that our sea’s salt and now tap waters have been contaminated by all the plastic pollution in our seas and on our earth, adding to expert’s fears that microplastics are becoming ever-present in the environment.  They are finding their way directly into our food chain via the salt in our diets!  “According to this week’s revelations in the Guardian about levels of plastic contamination in tap water, new research has shown that tiny particles have been found in sea salt in the UK, France, Spain, China and now the US.”  Scientists believe most of the contamination is coming from microfibers and single-use plastics such as water bottles.  Up to 12.7 million tons of plastic enters our oceans every year.  It’s like dumping one garbage truck of plastic every single minute into the world’s oceans, according to the United Nations.  This is crazy and inexcusable!

Sherri Mason, a professor at the Sate University of NY at Fredonia, who led this latest research, says that plastics are “ubiquitous, in the air, the tap water, ocean water, the seafood, fish omega supplements, the seafood we eat, the beer we drink and the salt we use – plastics are literally just everywhere”.  Researchers also found Americans could be ingesting upwards of 660 particles of plastic each year if they follow advise to eat 2.3g of salt per day but most of us are eating way more than this amount due to our heavily salted Western diet.  To read more on this topic go to https://amp.theguardian.com/environment/2017/sep/08/sea-salt-around-world-contaminated-by-plastic-studies
